Delineating cortical networks underlying epileptic encephalopathy and cognitive impairment with PET: a perspective.

چکیده
Sometimes childhood epilepsy may present with an acute onset of catastrophic seizures, rapidly progressing to intractable status epilepticus with poor outcome. One such example is postencephalitic epilepsy (1), which is a rare epileptic condition and is characterized by different names, such as acute encephalitis with refractory repetitive partial seizures (2), idiopathic catastrophic epileptic encephalopathy (3), devastating epileptic encephalopathy in school-age children (4), or febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (5). Postencephalitic epilepsy occurs in previously healthy children after a short febrile illness, followed by acute onset of treatmentresistant seizures that develop into

Neuroimaging and spectroscopy in children with epileptic encephalopathies.
AIMS To investigate the nature of the unifocal cortical abnormalities on FDG positron emission tomography (PET) in children with an epileptic encephalopathy but no focal abnormality on electroencephalogram or standard magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS Repeat FDG PET, surface rendered high resolution MRI, and single voxel magnetic resonance proton spectroscopy of the areas of abnormal ...
متن کاملDiabetic Encephalopathy Affects Mitochondria and Axonal Transport Proteins
Introduction: Diabetic encephalopathy is described as any cognitive and memory impairments and associated with hippocampal degenerative changes, include neurodegenerative process and decreased number of living cell. Mitochondrial Diabetes (MD) appears fallowing activation of mutant mitochondrial DNA and is combination of diabetes and cognitive deficit. In this research we showed the correlation...
متن کاملFunctional imaging of seizures and epilepsy: evolution from zones to networks.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Epilepsy research has extended from studies at the cellular level to the investigation of interactions of large neuronal populations distant from one another: 'epileptic networks'. This article underlines the concept of epilepsies as network disorders, adding empirical evidence from electroencephalography-combined functional MRI (EEG-fMRI) studies. RECENT FINDINGS These noni...
متن کاملHarnessing Gene Expression Networks to Prioritize Candidate Epileptic Encephalopathy Genes
We apply a novel gene expression network analysis to a cohort of 182 recently reported candidate Epileptic Encephalopathy genes to identify those most likely to be true Epileptic Encephalopathy genes. These candidate genes were identified as having single variants of likely pathogenic significance discovered in a large-scale massively parallel sequencing study. Candidate Epileptic Encephalopath...
متن کاملO 18: Autoimmune Dementia
Dementia is defined as significant acquired cognitive impairment in one or more cognitive domains that represents a significant decline from previous baseline and interferes with independence in daily activities. Autoimmune dementia is a term that has been used to describe a steroid-responsive autoimmune disorder characterized by a rapidly progressive dementia with a fluctuating course. Even co...
